I am Parth Kothekar from Ahmedabad, India.
I started my paper-cutting journey in 2012 and have been since experimenting with and learning from papercuts. In order to challenge myself, I come up with a thematic paper art series from time to time.
Since the beginning, I have enjoyed devising ways to make a sheet of paper look like the physical world. This brought me to dive into the iconic optical illusions created by M. C. Escher; his work with precise patterns fascinated me and I explored ways to depict that through my work.
I make use of variances in depth and scale to create scenarios that appear three-dimensional. Some of the cuts are more pictorial and evocative of Escher’s “Relativity” stairs, while others rely on repetitive motifs alone to create immersive scenes of geometric shapes and lines.
Each piece takes a minimum of 20 days to complete and it’s all hand-cut and folded from a single sheet of paper.
